Coffee in France
Drew. Ahhh, the French really know how to do coffee. Nothing to power you through a morning road trip like a big cup of dark roast that you can nurse for the trip.
Drew 2. That was sarcasm. Although they hit home runs on cheese and rich sauces, the French totally whiff on coffee. Others have noted this phenomena, largely due to the French sourcing their beans from their former colonies (not known for good beans), roasting the beans the wrong way, storing them the wrong way, and adding crap milk to the end product. Basically, when you want a good hit in Paris, look for an Italian cafe.
The concept of getting a coffee “to go” is also foreign to the French. Maybe this is a good thing — they all sip while relaxing in a cafe. But I’m at a loss as to how they power through a morning drive while fending off the inevitable carb crash from their breakfast croissants. Sara gets a kick out of me continuing to try to get a coffee “a emporter” for our morning jaunts, which they serve to me in a Dixie cup.
